Summer Hair Care
Summer is here! Time for the beach, popsicles, tan lines and pool days! We usually think of Summer being the time of year when our hair gets lighter and our beachy waves come out, but did you know that Summer is usually when your hair gets the most damaged? Here are some tips and tricks to keep your hair texture and color healthy and shiny for this hot season!
The number 1 rule of thumb when you are at the beach, by the pool or just outside on a hot, humid day is to wear sunscreen! We all hate the feeling of sunburn, but your scalp can get burned/damaged too! It is important we protect our scalp like we do our skin. A hat would of course protect from the harsh sun rays, like a baseball cap or a floppy sun hat. If hats aren’t your thing, a product I highly recommend is the “COOLA” Organic Scalp Spray & Sunscreen Mist w/ SPF 30. It is dermatologist recommended and you may want to reapply every 2-4 hours on a super hot day. A beach wave mist like the one we carry here at Essence, “REDKEN BEACH SPRAY” can also help keep a nice, natural curl pattern for your ends.
BLONDES LISTEN UP! How many times have you had a pool day and you come back home and realize your hair is GREEN?! I for one have, too many times than none. We all know how refreshing it is to fully submerge yourself in a pool on a hot day. So what are some ways to prevent this besides pulling your hair up in a bun and not going underwater? A protective coating like “REDKEN EXTREME CONDITIONER”, which we carry for your convenience, can work to prevent this! Just lather it on to damp hair and leave it in the hair for your pool day. Then just re-wash your hair when you return home. If you have a last minute pool or lake day and don’t have time to apply conditioner, there is another thing you can do to get the green out. KETCHUP! Yep, that’s right! It sounds disgusting but it truly does work. According to the color wheel, the color that takes green out of hair is red! Simply apply the ketchup to the green in the hair, leave it in for 5 minutes, then shampoo and condition it out and you may even notice an extra shine! You may even want to use a purple or color safe shampoo when rinsing, like “PUREOLOGY” Strength Cure Blonde or “REDKEN” color magnetics shampoo.
Lastly, a good mask or leave-in conditioner is great for the hair during this time of year, the hot weather tends to dry the hair out so you want to make sure you are putting plenty of moisture back into the hair, similar to putting moisturizer on your skin. “REDKEN” and “PUREOLOGY”, both have amazing masks and leave-in treatments for the hair. Just stop by Essence salon to grab yours today and a stylist would be more than willing to help assist you in finding one for your hair needs! Hopefully this article has given you some neat tips and tricks on how to care for your hair this Summer! Happy Swimming 😀
